Ambassador Zhang,
Chancellor Hong and members of your delegation,
President Hamdullahpur,
Ladies and gentlemen,
Thank you for your warm welcome.
It is a wonderful honour to receive this distinction from Nanjing University, one of the oldest and most prestigious institutions of high-er learning in China.
I had the privilege of visiting Nanjing and seeing the university in person a number of times over the past decade, prior to my installa-tion as governor general of Canada.
During that time, I was president of the University of Waterloo, and I remember as if it was yesterday being in Nanjing with the Gov-ernor of Jiangsu Province, the Premier of Ontario and the President and colleagues of Nanjing University for the formal establishment of the Sino-Canadian College on the grounds of your magnificent new campus.
I also remember the sense of excitement and possibility we all felt in establishing a partnership between our two universities.
As president, it was my privilege to welcome to the University of Waterloo many incoming colleagues and students from Nanjing U-niversity-including the Chancellor, upon whom we conferred an honorary doctorate.
As governor general, I remain committed to fostering learning and innovation, and I am actively looking to build bridges between Canada and the world.
That is one reason why I am pleased to accept this honour today.
I strongly believe in the importance of working together-across borders and across disciplines-to create a smarter, more caring world.
Through partnership, collaboration and friendship-such as that which exists between Canada and China, and between Nanjing Univer-sity and Canadian institutions-I believe we can tackle the complex, interrelated challenges of the 21st century.
In fact, it is only through co-operation that we will thrive together as citizens of the world.
Together, we must practise what I call the diplomacy of knowledge.
When diverse people achieve the right mixture of creativity, communication and co-operation, remarkable things can happen.
I have seen this throughout my life as a student, educator and university administrator, and more recently as governor general, travel-ling across Canada and on visits around the world.
To draw another example from my university days, I recall how those students who came to Waterloo from Nanjing University added a unique perspective and knowledge base that contributed greatly to the academic and cultural life of the university.
This wonderful diversity is one of the secrets to the success of that institution.
It also builds the people-to-people relationships-the personal friendships-which are the basis of true relationships.
In fact, my eldest two daughters, who are here today, both studied in China-Debbie at the Chinese University of Hong Kong and at Zhejiang University, and Alex for two years at the Beijing Foreign Languages Institute. They both made many friends.
A diversity of perspectives can lead to new insights. Knowledge belongs to everyone, and inclusiveness only strengthens our under-standing.
This has been our experience in multicultural Canada, and it is why it is so important for us to work together as peoples and as nations.
The constant, dynamic elements in our learning are creativity, communication and co-operation.
Canadians and the people of China are playing important roles in the global knowledge society that is emerging-and together, we can do more.
It is always a thrill to put on the academic robes, and doing so for an occasion such as this is even more special.
I consider this honorary doctorate a wonderful gesture of friendship and respect, one that brings us closer together in the community of learners and of nations.
I want to extend a special thank you to the members of the delegation who have travelled to Ottawa from China for this presentation.
I sincerely appreciate your generosity of time and spirit.
Let me close by sharing with you the call to service that I have made since my installation as governor general.
As citizens of Canada-and of China-our goal must be to bring about a smarter, more caring world, where everyone can develop their talents, contribute to the greater good, and succeed to their fullest potential.
We dream of a world that increases and applies the knowledge of its people to improve the condition of all.
Let us pursue this dream together, in a spirit of confidence, curiosity and respect.
Thank you again for this honour.
